It’s not a first time when designers turn their
attention to Africa in search of inspiration. However the S/S 2012 collections have impressed by a flourish of African theme.
Donna Karan, Michael Kors, Christopher Bailey and Jack McCollough & Lazaro
Hernandez presented their creations inspired by a safari under the burning sun,
animal and tribal prints and a natural palette of colours. All over again
Michael Kors offered his fans a style interpretation of Sydney Pollack’s famous
“Out of Africa” film. A canvas fabric, the khaki shades, the bags made of a rough
leather and the accessories reminding of the elephants tusks flooded the catwalk and
imagination of the audience. Designer Donna Karan went off for a back-in-time journey
to the cradle of civilization and the
cave art. The ancient-African tribes’ intricate masks and whimsical figures are
starring at us from the designer’s skirts and dresses. Christopher
Bailey let his imagination go and decorated linen and straw clutches, caps and
sandals of his models with the big, colourful, wooden beads. The Burberry
Prorsum S/S12 collection celebrates the earthy palette (think: ochre, olive
green, clay red) and the finest natural fabrics. The creators and genius behind
Proenza Schouler
drew inspiration from the warm colours and mysterious prints of the African
continent. Their collection made us feel a touch of the burning sun and the dry
wind from Sahara on our faces.
I follow the footprints of famous
designers. And if I didn’t manage to head in the direction of Africa this season I’ll at least recreate and channel the
fascinating African look in my every-day life.

Its is so great and refreshing seeing designers looking to Africa for inspiration! People here wear tribal prints not so much as a fashion trend but as part of their heritage and culture. Good post
